Student work We are always working on writing skills here at St. Mary's. Here are a couple of samples from our 4th grade where students are working on noun modifiers and figurative language. These two stories reflect those days when we all enjoyed a furry 'best' friend.
Yellow Blankie By, Emma Curtin
Most people have a comfort creature, mine is my yellow blanket. I call it, Yellow Blankie. It is a soft yellow blanket with my name, Emma on it. It is as fuzzy and soft as a bear. It was my best friend when I was little. My mom’s marvelous friend Annie Maloon gave it to me. Annie got it from lovely Lands’ End when I was born. Yellow Blankie is special to me because my name, Emma is on it and I love it! I love it because I took it everywhere and it was a great friend to me. Yellow Blankie is like the bark on my tree. I think everyone should have a special comfort creature because it is an awesome best friend and someone to play with. I took my Yellow Blankie to my warm crib with me, where I played and cuddled with it. I also took it to my great grandparents. I took it with me when I went for walks around the wonderful town. I took it just about everywhere. I played with Yellow Blankie when I was little. I used to wrap my little baby dolls in it. I also put it over my little baby dolls when they were sleeping soundly. I also played with it when I needed a fabulous friend to play with. When I slept with it, my marvelous mom would put it over me in my great crib. Sometimes my marvelous mom or delightful dad would hold me and wrap me up in Yellow Blankie. I hugged it when I needed a fun friend. Yellow Blankie is special to me for all these reasons. As you can see most people should have a special comfort creature, mine is Yellow Blankie.
My Furry Friend, Hedgy By, Tyler Phinney Did you ever have a special blanket or stuffed animal that you could always rely on, through good times and bad? Well, that’s how I feel about my happy hedgehog, Hedgy. Hedgy is a handsome, spiky hedgehog. His rosy, red cheeks are fiery, red suns and he has quills like spears. Hedgy is the apple of my eye. My caring mom bought him for me. Just thinking about my mom buying him makes me so thankful. I chose to get Hedgy because out of all of those cute stuffed animals on the shelf, I knew Hedgy was the one for me. I bought Hedgy at the fantastic Learning Express, on a wooden shelf in the back of the store. I got Hedgy two years ago. I had a strong feeling he knew I would buy him. We have been best friends ever since. I love Hedgy like a bunny loves a carrot. Hedgy is special to me because he always wants to hear what I want to say, he always listens to me when I talk to him, and he’s always there for me when I need him…and I know he always will be!
