Summer School Work:  Grade 2

Second Grade Summer Reading Assignment

Each child should read a minimum of ten books during the summer.  Enclosed is a suggested list of authors and book series (picture books count as one and short chapter books can count double if need be).   Please assist your child in finding authors and books of an appropriate level.  Reading out loud, being read to, and reading silently are all beneficial for children of this age.   The intent of this assignment is for your child to enjoy reading and to learn to read regularly.  Record titles, authors, and pages read on the Reading Log and bring back to school on the first day.

Second Grade Math

It is very important that you help your child practice basic Math facts over the summer (addition and subtraction 0-18).  Basic addition and subtraction will be forgotten if not reviewed (flash cards, dice, dominoes, workbooks).  Incorporating math into everyday activities such as cooking, going to the store, counting the penny jar, or playing board games (cards, Monopoly Jr., checkers, Yahtzee) is beneficial as well.  Use the Math Log to record math practice for at least ten 20 minute practice sessions.  This can be fun and educational. Please send me a short note if you need ideas for math practice.

Second Grade Supply List

The following is a list of supplies that will be needed the first day of school in the fall:

1. Two red pens

2. A package of colored pencils

3. One small box of crayons (16-24)- Crayola

4. One soft pencil case

5. Nine glue sticks

6. A small pencil sharpener

7. Three Grade 2 composition notebooks

8. Twelve  #2 pencils and eraser blocks or eraser caps

9. Two thin dry erase markers

10. Two large boxes of tissues

11. Two packages of hypoallergenic, unscented baby wipes

12. One box of Ziploc bags- gallon and quart size  ( for math & language arts activities)  

13. A package of index cards- 5x3 inches (for spelling & math) white or colored is OK  

Please understand that these supplies will need to be replenished during the year.  Also, students will not be needing markers in class this year. The School Store Kits contain numbers 1-9 and you will still need to purchase #10-13.

** Please do not put your child’s name on the folders or notebooks.
