Summer School Work:  Grade 3

Third Grade Summer Reading Assignment

You are to read two books over the summer that are just right for you.  Attached is a list of 2nd to 3rd grade books to choose from.  A good idea would be to do one report in July and one report in August.  Follow the directions below.

  1. Use lined paper to write on.

  2. Skip a line as you write in complete sentences in your neatest printing.

  3. Write your first name and last name on the top of your paper.

  4. Number your pages and staple them together when you are done.

  5. Label each Part in your report.

  6. Part One: title, author and/or illustrator, and number of pages in the book.

  7. Part Two: Characters.  List the main characters.

  8. Part Three: Setting.  In 2-3 sentences describe the setting.  Tell where the story takes place.

  9. Part Four: Problem.  In 2-3 sentences tell what the problem is in the story.

  10. Part Five:  Important Events.  Explain the beginning, middle, and end.  How is the problem solved? Each part should be written in 2-3 sentences.

  11. On a separate sheet of blank white paper illustrate your favorite part of the story.  Include a caption (one sentence) that tells what is happening in the picture.

  12. This summer reading assignment is due on the first day of school.

Third Grade Math

It is very important that you help your child practice basic Math facts over the summer (addition and subtraction 0-18).  Basic addition and subtraction will be forgotten if not reviewed (flash cards, dice, dominoes, workbooks).  Incorporating math into everyday activities such as cooking, going to the store, counting the penny jar, or playing board games (cards, Monopoly Jr., checkers, Yahtzee) is beneficial as well.  Use the Math Log to record math practice for at least ten 20 minute practice sessions.  This can be fun and educational. Please send me a short note if you need ideas for math practice.

There are many computer websites that are educational such as  www.funbrain.com and www.starfall.com.  Also my Quia website has many Math and Language Arts learning activities.  http://www.quia.com/pages/mrscunningham2.html
